Game Boy Color: a short-lived system with a deep back catalogue
Launched in 1998, the Game Boy Color added a colour screen and more memory to the Game Boy formula and was replaced by the Game Boy Advance only a few years later. That short life left an odd legacy: many games were planned for it and never finished, and a surprising number of Japanese releases never travelled west.
This page collects 60 Game Boy Color titles, all handmade physical cartridges and all unofficial reproductions.
What makes the Color library special
- Cancelled games that survived as prototypes, from licensed adaptations to original projects shelved before release
- Fan translations that finally let English readers play Japanese-only adventures and RPGs
- Pokémon ROM hacks and fan games, a whole scene of its own, built on the Gold, Silver and Crystal engine
- Modern fan projects that push the hardware further than the original developers did
Compatibility
Games made exclusively for Color will not run on the original monochrome Game Boy. They work on the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP.
