Golf King for Game Boy Color - a cancelled, never-released localization.
"Golf Ou - The King of Golf" is a golf game by Digital Kids for the Game Boy Color, released in mid-1999 in Japan only. From a technical standpoint it is modestly notable for its use of autosave and voice acting.
This is an official but never-released English translation. The game was never sold in the USA or Europe, but the localization ROMs surfaced in the 2020 leak of Nintendo material. Two different localization attempts by Crave Entertainment, dated 2000, were found in the September 2020 leak:
- Golf King, a more direct localization aimed at the European market (playable in English, French and German).
- Supershot Golf Robot, intended for North America, which replaces your friendly mentor with a mad robot.
Golf Ou and Golf Robot share their Super Game Boy border, while Golf King has its own. Golf King uses a re-designed version of the Golf Ou logo, and Golf Robot received a completely unique one. Golf King omits any year text, the grass at the bottom of the screen differs, and the "Digital Kids" text is green.
General differences from the Japanese original:
- All voice clips were removed.
- Game Boy Printer support (pressing Start to print the scorecard) was removed.
- Selecting the multiplayer Match Play option without the other system connected and ready now shows an error message instead of just beeping.
- The scorecard putt-count heading was corrected from the transliterated "PAT" to "PUT".
- The credits between Golf King and Golf Robot are mostly the same, except for an added Robot Concept and Design credit for Ryan Villiers-Furze and Ethan Malykont.
