The original Game Boy, still getting new games
The Game Boy arrived in 1989 with a 160×144 screen in four shades of olive green, a famously indestructible shell and a library that kept growing well into the 2000s. Its audience never left. A new generation of fans keeps making games for it, and rescuing the ones that never reached the shops.
This page collects 40 Game Boy titles that are not on any ordinary retail shelf. Every one is a handmade physical cartridge, made in small numbers and meant to be slotted into a real console.
What you will find here
- Fan translations of Japan-only role-playing games, including long-forgotten Megami Tensei spin-offs and Medarot entries
- ROM hacks and fan games that rework a familiar game into something new, from Pokémon variants to remixed classics
- Cancelled and unreleased prototypes that surfaced decades later
- Modern homebrew written for the system by hobbyist developers
Playing on real hardware
Game Boy cartridges also work on the Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP, so a single cartridge covers most of the handheld family.
