Oni Chronicles Genesis (Kinin Koumaroku Oni), developed by Winky Soft, was released in Japan on December 8, 1990, for the Nintendo Game Boy. The storyline takes place in feudal Japan and is inspired by Japanese folklore, in a role-playing format.
Co-developed by Pandora Box (Ryuuki Heidan Dunzarv, Magic Knight Rayearth on SNES, Metamoqester, Arabian Nights: Sabaku no Seirei Ou) and WinkySoft (Super Robot Taisen, Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars, Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie) and distributed by Banpresto in 1990 exclusively in Japan, Kinin Koumaroku Oni is a turn-based RPG and the first installment of the Oni franchise.
Despite spanning around ten games released between 1990 and 2007 across various consoles (five entries for Game Boy, two for SNES, one for PlayStation, and one for Nintendo DS), the Oni franchise remains largely unknown in the West, with no main entries ever published outside Japan, nor its anime, Touma Kishinden Oni. Interestingly, Oni: The Ninja Master (1995) is a spin-off fighting game for arcades that did reach the West under the name Metamoqester.
Thanks to this fan translation of the original Japanese game into English, you can now enjoy this fantastic RPG on your Game Boy. A French translation is also included.
