Games that were never supposed to be played
Behind every console library is a graveyard of games that were cancelled, shelved or never finished. Sometimes an early build leaks, a developer shares a cartridge or a long-lost disk turns up, and a piece of gaming history becomes playable again.
This page collects 26 prototypes, cancelled games and tech demos, preserved as handmade physical cartridges. They are unofficial reproductions and are not endorsed by the original studios or publishers.
Types of lost games
- Cancelled projects, stopped before release for business or technical reasons
- Prototypes and alphas that differ from the shipped version
- Tech demos built to show what a console could do
- Unreleased localisations that existed in one region only
Why they matter
Prototypes show what developers were attempting before deadlines, budgets and publishers shaped the final game. Many are rough, and that is part of the appeal.
