Fuzz and Rocket: Halfbrick's Lost Game Boy Advance Platformer

Before Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride, Australian studio Halfbrick was making a Yoshi's Island-inspired platformer for the Game Boy Advance. Fuzz and Rocket was nearly finished, but the studio never found a publisher, and the project was shelved. In May 2024 a build was dumped and released by Codebound, bringing the game out of the unreleased pile.

At a glance

  • Developer: Halfbrick Studios
  • Genre: 2D action platformer
  • Status: Cancelled and unreleased; a January 2005 prototype build was released in May 2024
  • What sets it apart: You throw your sidekick Rocket to solve puzzles and defeat enemies

The game

Halfbrick's own pitch described Fuzz and his sidekick Rocket trying to restore order to the land of Fulu, where mysterious masks have possessed the rulers of eight kingdoms. Plans called for over eight worlds, more than 32 levels, bonus games and cutscenes. The studio billed it as its first GBA title based on an original idea, built in-house with its own engine and tools. It was even nominated at the 2003 Australian Game Developers Awards.

Why it was never released

Accounts say the game was last seen at E3 2005 and was close to done, but the team could not find a publisher before the Nintendo DS took over from the GBA.

How it surfaced

Hidden Palace lists the build as dated 18 January 2005 and describes the game as nearly complete.
