The Legacy of Goku II: Webfoot's Leap from One Hero to a Team
The first Legacy of Goku let you control only Goku. In its 2003 sequel, Webfoot Technologies broadened the formula into a proper party-based action RPG.
At a glance
- Created by: Webfoot Technologies (developer); Atari (North America), Infogrames (Europe), Banpresto (Japan)
- Released: North America 17 June 2003, Europe 1 August 2003, Japan 23 July 2004
- Genre: Top-down action RPG
- What sets it apart: multiple playable heroes, transformations and a scouter
What changed from the first game
You start as Gohan and unlock Piccolo, Vegeta, Trunks and finally Goku, who has the most limited role. The game opens in the future timeline from The History of Trunks and then follows the Android and Cell sagas, adding extras such as a battle with Cooler and many side quests.
New systems include:
- Transformations that boost strength for a time but drain your energy bar.
- A scouter that lets you check other characters' stats.
- Charged melee attacks and capsules hidden around the world that raise your stats.
After the story, Mister Satan (Hercule) can be unlocked for an alternate ending. The soundtrack is based on Bruce Faulconer's score for the English FUNimation dub.
Reception and a Japanese release
Metacritic reports 75 out of 100, with IGN and Nintendo World Report both giving 8/10 and GameSpot 7.6/10, and EGM a lower 5.5/10. By August 2006 it had sold about 630,000 copies in the United States. In Japan it appeared as The Legacy of Goku II International, with new character profile images and the original Japanese names restored.
