Pokémon Naranja: an early Orange Islands hack that inspired a better-known one

Pokémon Naranja ("naranja" is Spanish for orange) is an old fan hack for the Game Boy Advance that sends you to the Orange Archipelago, the setting of the anime's second season. It belongs to the Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald generation, and a French fan wiki lists it as a hack of those games; a fan forum thread from February 2009 discusses patching it onto a Ruby game, which shows it was already circulating by then. No readable page names its authors.

At a glance

  • Based on: The Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald generation (a 2009 forum thread mentions Ruby)
  • Created by: Not credited in the sources found
  • Released: In circulation by early 2009
  • Genre: Anime-inspired adventure hack
  • What sets it apart: You can choose to play as Ash or as Misty

What it offers

  • The Orange Archipelago, with new towns to explore (a French wiki counts six)
  • A choice between Ash and Misty as the lead, which a French fan blog from 2012 called a first
  • Pokémon from the first three generations
  • A single catchable Crystal Onix
  • Tropical colour variants and anime-style gym trials, according to the product listing

A hack with an afterlife

Naranja left a mark on later fan projects. The author of the much more recent Pokémon Orange for Game Boy Color wrote that he started hacking after playing Pokémon Naranja on a cartridge, and that he had always wanted a good Orange Islands hack to exist.
