Orange Islands on Game Boy Advance: Ash's Island-Hopping Journey in FireRed

After winning the Indigo League, Ash is sent by Professor Oak to Valencia Island to collect a special Poké Ball. That is how the Orange Islands chapter of the anime begins, and it is also how this fan game opens. Pokémon Orange Islands is a hack of Pokémon FireRed by Kalarie that follows most of the anime's storyline across the archipelago, with some episodes turned into side quests.

At a glance

  • Based on: Pokémon FireRed (Game Boy Advance), following the Orange Islands anime arc
  • Created by: Kalarie
  • Released: 2021 (Beta 5.7, described by its listing as complete; last updated June 2021)
  • Genre: Role-playing, anime-inspired adventure
  • What sets it apart: four island Gym Leaders and badges in place of the usual Kanto circuit

How the anime became a game

Gym battles stand in for the anime's own challenges, including its wave and sled races, so each island brings a new trial. The finale includes the Movie 2000 event on Shamouti Island.

  • New sprites, tiles and maps for the archipelago.
  • Pikachu as your starter, with a chance to recover some of Ash's other Pokémon early.
  • All 151 Generation I Pokémon, plus Tracey's Marill from Generation II.
  • The physical/special move split.
  • Items that replace the HMs for Dive, Whirlpool, Rock Smash and Rock Climb.
  • A failed capture attempt no longer costs you the Poké Ball.

The road to completion

Discussion of the hack on PokéCommunity refers to a Beta 5.0 as the official release with all 151 Kanto Pokémon catchable. Later betas, up to 5.7, kept building on it.
