Red Chapter: the Pokémon Adventures manga, rebuilt inside FireRed
Pokémon Adventure - Red Chapter is a one-person adaptation of the Pokémon Adventures manga (the long-running comic series that retells the games with its own plot). It is told through the eyes of Red, the trainer from Pallet Town, and instead of following the game script it follows the manga's version of events. The story is cut into chapters, with side chapters that can be started from their own entry points.
The hack comes from Aethestode, who developed it on top of Pokémon FireRed and released it as a long series of public betas. The PokéCommunity thread lists builds from Beta 11 in November 2015 to Beta 15 + Expansion in October 2020, which the author called the final major update for Volume 1. A second volume was announced as being in development.
At a glance
- Based on: Pokémon FireRed, adapting the Pokémon Adventures manga
- Created by: Aethestode, with credited help for sprites, code routines and proofreading
- Released: Public betas from 2015 to 2020
- Genre: Story-driven RPG hack
- What sets it apart: A manga retelling with its own chapters, rivals and playable characters
What the hack changes
- Two rivals, Blue and Green, instead of a single one
- Several regions are planned; Volume 1 covers Kanto and, in later builds, the Orange Archipelago
- Reworked visuals, playable characters, costumes and character portraits
- A day and night system, a level cap raised from 100 to 255, reusable TMs and a Lens item that shows a Pokémon's EVs and IVs
- A modern physical/special/status move split
A work in progress, with a warning
Every release is labelled a beta, and the author flagged that some content is not meant for younger players. Because the project grew over five years, builds differ a lot in how far the story goes, so the amount of manga you can play depends on the version.
