Gotta Capture 'Em All in Ivalice: FFTA Rebuilt Around Monster Taming
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (2003) sends a group of schoolchildren into the land of Ivalice, where you build a clan and fight grid-based battles. Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced Battle, a hack by LeonarthCG, keeps that framework but changes who fights for you: instead of recruiting humans, you catch monsters.
At a glance
- Based on: Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (USA/Australia release)
- Created by: LeonarthCG
- Released: 16 August 2020, version 1.3.1
- Genre: Turn-based tactics RPG
- What sets it apart: The party is built almost entirely from captured monsters
What changes
- A new item, the Capture Orb, recruits monsters that then join your side, unlike in the vanilla game.
- Every route to new humanoid recruits is disabled, so you play with the two starting humans and your monsters.
- Abilities work as in the original Final Fantasy Tactics: units earn JP and spend it directly on purchases, which is the only way to teach monsters new skills.
Version history
- 1.1: the game can now be 100 percent completed.
- 1.2: two monsters were added to the starting roster to ease the early difficulty.
- 1.3: monsters can be nicknamed from the stat menu with START; a title screen issue was fixed.
Reception
The hack passed 17,000 downloads on RomHacking.net and carries three user reviews, all recommended. One reviewer likened it to what Pokemon Conquest might have been.
